Schools nationwide have been instructed to close and stop any form of learning activity. The period for this lockdown is unknown as the rate at which the covid-19 is spreading is creating huge concern for everyone. While some schools have provided options to teach students online, other schools that lack these facilities are forced to send the kids home without any option of teaching them.

Hence, parents are stuck at home with their kids, and it is your duty as their parent to ensure your kids do not waste this time on playing and Television alone. What you are to do is to ensure they continue to learn at home, you might be asking yourself this – “but I am not a teacher, how do I do this”. Here are some tips to help you with homeschooling your children.

1. The number one step is to create a learning environment. You cannot say you want your kids to learn, and you have the TV on all day, or they have 24-hour access to their games, toys, and phones. How do you expect such a child to want to study when there are distractions everywhere?

Homeschooling your kids has its own advantages – they are free to learn anywhere as long as it works well for them. Also, their individual needs are catered for.

2.  Create a time table. Even in school, the kids work with a time table that helps separate classes, recess, and sports time. Likewise at home, you should do the same. You can’t say because they are at home, they will spend the whole day studying.

Their attention span is short, more reason why you need to schedule their day stating the time for study, play, TV, lunch, game, etc.

3. Work with their syllabus. We all know that learning new things can be really helpful, but since the schools are on lockdown, this seems like the best time for them to catch up on past subjects and topics. The reason is so you do not end up teaching them what they do not need.

4.  Does your kid have an interest in cooking, baking, arts, pot planting, etc? This is the best time to teach them. Let them work and develop their interest. There are many online resources that are capable of teaching your kids. Websites like; PBS KIDS, Mathschase, MathGames, National Geographic Kids, LearnZillion, and many more like that are built to teach kids.

5. Let your kids choose what to learn. Rather than imposing what to learn on them, let them select what they would like to learn and you’ll be surprised at how motivated they will be to learn. It is better you pay close attention to them, so when they are in need of your help they can call on you.

Motivate them by introducing the reward system – but ensure this does not become a habit whereby they will not study unless they are promised goodies or gifts.

Homeschooling your children during coronavirus lockdown can be a fun-filled one as the kids do not have to worry about rushing to school in the morning. Tests and exams are not involved, and they get as much break as they want more than when they are in school.

You can apply those tips mentioned above to give your kids the best home learning experience. Ensure you give them the chance to choose the learning style that is best for them, and watch how fast they will learn.

Remember, encourage proper hygiene for your kids, let them wash their hands with soap and water regularly, do not allow them to go out of the house anyhow, and restrict them from going to play with friends. Stay safe and healthy!
