Have you ever asked yourself this question, “What am I still doing for my kids that they can do themselves?” I had a parent that still helps the kids do their laundry, even though they are in high school. Funny right? The Nigerian in us would have started giving the children chores even before they finish their primary education.
When we talk about teaching kids self-sufficiency, it should start from our homes. As their parent, there are certain tasks that they should be able to do – age-appropriate chores like assisting with meals and laundry, getting themselves ready for school, etc.
Why is self-sufficiency important?
There is a popular saying that we are merely caretakers of our kids, which means ‘we are to train them.’ So why not train them to be self-sufficient. We train our kids so that they can be able to take charge of their lives when they are grown. You won’t be there to help forever, just like that parent that still helps the kids with their laundry.
A time will come when you won’t be able to help again. Who then will help them? Teaching kids self-sufficiency gives them a sense of responsibility. Not only that, but it also builds their self-esteem.
Step back let your kids also step up
As their parent, we are always ready to help them solve whatever problem they might be having. If you keep doing this, how do you expect them to ‘learn from their own mistakes?’ There is a point in their lives where you will start to take the role of their teacher and not the parent (problem-solver) alone. It is by doing things themselves that they are able to learn and develop self-sufficiency.
Tips to self-sufficiency
It is easier to develop this in kids when they are young. If you are yet to focus on this, it is not too late to start. Gradual changes would be better rather than going for those big changes. Press harder when it gets difficult, self-sufficiency is crucial for your kids’ success in the future.
