Children’s Day is a day for celebrating children and raising awareness about their rights. It is celebrated every 27th of May each year and it is a national observance that promotes the rights, health, and well-being of children. The first Children’s Day was observed across Nigeria in 1950. This happened at the initiative of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo who was then leader of opposition in the Western House Assembly during colonial rule (1951). He felt strongly about protecting Nigerian children from abuse by adults or other youths because he had lost his daughter Taiwo Awolowo to malaria soon after she was born in 1940 at Ikenne near Ado-Ekiti.
Who’s Celebrating Children’s Day?
The whole country celebrates this day because everyone wants their children to grow up healthy and strong! Celebrate Children’s Day by doing something fun with your children. Children’s Day is a good opportunity to celebrate and appreciate the gift of life that God has given you, your child. You are blessed to have a child in your life, even if it is only one. This day gives us an opportunity to let them know how special they are as well as encourage them towards achieving their goals and dreams in life.
It is also an ideal time for parents to teach their children about this special day which will help them understand its importance later on in life when they become independent adults who can celebrate it themselves independently from their parents!
Celebrate Children’s Day by doing something that your children enjoy doing together with you or independently at the park or on the beach with other playmates; playing games like soccer, basketball or volleyball, etc., going out with friends while still having fun at home watching movies together before going off to bed.
