Exploring the Benefits of AI Education Tools in the Classroom

Artificial intelligence has many applications and benefits. People have theorized how could technology benefit education and learning. But where previously, people could only think about it, nowadays they can implement it.

Even though artificial intelligence is not yet mainstream, efforts are being made to integrate it into classrooms. In the pandemic when remote learning was mainstream, there was an increase in the use of AI tools.

Today, we are going to take a look at the benefits of different AI-powered tools in the classroom.

Benefits of Different AI Tools in the Classroom

1.     AI Search Engines/Chatbots can Act as Virtual Assistants

One of the most popular AI tools nowadays are AI search engines and chatbots. These systems can provide answers to almost all types of questions. Their answers are also backed by sources, so users can be sure that they are not making stuff up (which is, unfortunately, true sometimes).

In the classroom, they can act as virtual assistants. Teachers can use them to explain stuff in easier wording, or by using them to pull up relevant materials online. Students on the other hand can use such tools to conduct thorough research on topics. A great example of this in action is Bing AI on Skype.

An online classroom that uses Skype can add Bing AI as a member in the group chat. Here people can address Bing AI and have it provide answers to their queries.

2.     AI Rewriters Help Avoid Plagiarism

Students are the most common offenders of plagiarism, and that is largely due to incomplete knowledge. Students either don’t know about plagiarism or have imperfect knowledge about it. This results in lots of verbatim plagiarism occurring in their work. Verbatim plagiarism is the direct copying of words from a source either fully or partially.

This is a problem in the classroom because committing plagiarism is a breach of academic integrity. Students need help to avoid plagiarism, help which teachers are not able to give. Thankfully AI rewriting tools can help here instead.

An article rewriter is a tool that can rewrite any content by changing words and phrases in it without altering its content. By using an article rewriter, students can rewrite the plagiarized text from their assignments and essays to avoid verbatim plagiarism. Take a look at this example, the sample text is changed completely:

So, AI tools aid students in staying away from unethical practices and help them to stay on the right path. And that’s not all, using an article rewriter is a good source of passive learning as well.

3.     AI Grammar Checker Help Improve Language

One of the things that students have issues with is grammar. Now, in a conventional school setting, it is impractical to think that a teacher could give special attention to each student and correct their grammar.

After all, there is only one teacher and dozens of students. What if there was a way to let each student know what mistakes they are making and how to correct them?

That’s exactly what AI grammar-checking tools can do. Each student can check their work with the help of a tool. An AI grammar checker is a good AI tool that can identify grammatical errors, provide a correction, and explain what the error was.

Take a look at this example:

The grammar checker shows that the error is a spelling mistake and suggests the correct spelling as well. In this way, students can quickly deal with their grammar problems and improve them on their own. This facilitates learning and prevents the class from being held up.

4.     AI Summarizing Tool Help with Note Taking and Comprehension

One of the most important tasks in a classroom is taking notes. Teachers have to give lengthy lectures, many of which cover complex topics. But they only have a small amount of time to do so. That means sometimes they rush to finish their lecture. But that poses a problem for the students. They can’t keep up with the speed of the lecture and can’t effectively take notes.

Here is where AI tools such as a summarizing tool can help students. A summarizer (as its name suggests) is a tool that can extract the core points of a write-up and condense them into a smaller form without losing any meaning.

Here is a demonstration of an online summarizing tool:

Students can request the teacher to give them their lecture notes (which are extremely detailed) and then summarize them to create their notes. To maximize student learning, students can compare their notes with the results of the summarizer and supplement them.

Additional Benefits of AI Tools

Until now we were discussing particular advantages of AI tools in the classroom. We saw how different types of AI ed-tech tools helped with different tasks. But let’s take a look at some of the general benefits of AI ed-tech tools.

  • They are extremely fast. Ed-tech tools are usually very fast. They take only a few seconds to do their tasks, while humans have to take a couple of hours at best.
  • They are very accurate. Ed-tech tools that are powered by artificial intelligence are good at being right. Machines rarely make errors, and AI-powered machines make even fewer ones.
  • Improve Learning potential. AI tools help students to learn on their own. Different tools facilitate different types of learning. Some classic examples would be grammar checkers improving grammar, AI search engines providing knowledge about any subject, and paraphrasers improving vocabulary and language skills.
  • They are Cheap. AI-powered Ed-tech tools are cheap. Most of the time students can find them for free too. Many ed-tech tools have free and premium versions, where the free versions are typically powerful enough to fulfill student needs.

Conclusion

And there you have it, the benefits of using AI ed-tech tools in the classroom. They provide several benefits to both teachers and students. Incorporating their use in the classroom helps to streamline learning, prevent holdups and ensure that the class remains on the expected level of learning.
