Your child has been cooped up all year inside the classroom with lots of rules and “don’ts.” Why not make summertime a season for a little abandon and freedom? Let your child get messy; let him or her have fun by pulling out a box of craft materials. You can associate learning mathematics with arts and crafts. How many beads does it take to make this necklace? What shapes are we using? Take out the glue and even the feathers, glitter, and rhinestones. Talk about shapes and counting. Let the kids make summer-themed crafts or greeting cards to keep up with simple spelling and even poetry.
Go On an Adventure
What better way to make learning fun than to go on an adventure? Go to the beach and try to find seashells that have similarities and differences. Go to monumental sites for sightseeing, by this kids will be able to identify those places they’ve been taught in school. Take them for nature walk also, they necessary do not have to walk for miles, by visiting parks, they are able to appreciate nature.
Make Reading Fun
Once you have gone to the park or on a walking adventure, take time to go to the library and pick up some books about nature. Talk about the different shapes and types of leaves, the popular flowers they’ve been taught in class. Perhaps you have a small space in your backyard, engage your kids in flower gardening. Not everything has to be about power rangers, paw patrols, Tom & Jerry, and the likes.
The Zoo is also an interesting place that kids can visit during the summer holiday. The world as we know it is changing, most kids now prefer to just sit at home watching cartoons all day. Apart from the fact that this is not good for their health, it is also not good for their learning.
Well, kids can learn things on TV too, but this does not stop them from having experience and seeing those animals they can identify in their learning manuals. These are the kids that will take over the world when we are gone. It is our duty as their parents to teach them to appreciate nature and the reason why they have to preserve it.
Kids learn by what they see and practice, do not limit their learning to the four walls of the classroom alone. Education does not always have to be about do’s and don’t s, it is also about learning from experience.
